The Freedom of God

Our God, Father, Creator, and Savior, is free; free from any constraints imposed by conflicting and contrarian wills or powers. No shackles hold him; no limitations circumscribe His activity. No possibility of failure awaits Him as He moves forward into the consummation of the passionate goal of His love.

His love, mercy, grace and rightness are unbounded. He is the anti-type of the soaring eagle. He is the Wind that "bloweth where it listeth...." All creation's groaning for liberty looks to Him that it might share the liberty of the glory of the children of God. All yearnings to be set free find their rest only in Him.

I haven't found in my studies much writing that directly associates God's freedom with His sovereignty, but they are two sides of the same Majesty on high. God is sovereign in that He is truly free with a freedom that can be defined as that which seamlessly proceeds from His holy desire, on to His noble intention, continuing on to His magnificently lofty purpose, then to the application of His immutable will, resulting in "the good pleasure of His will" by which He births His own full satisfaction.

Neither sonship nor creaturehood knows any freedom other than grace-bestowed participation in the freedom of God, and the freedom which is God. That all humanity should, and therefore must, so participate is at the heart of His passion, and for this, His Son, our Lord and Savior, came. "Ye SHALL know the Truth, and the Truth shall set you free." (Emphasis mine). Truth's Reality comes to us by deliverance, for "Whom the Son sets free, is free indeed."

We are set free from sin and death, from illness of being into well-being, into wholeness, into whole-person health BY communion in the freedom of God. His freedom dissolves our bondage. His freedom breaks our chains. We, who were prisoners by the disability of our dis-ease, are freed to soar in the glorious heights of the ease of his wellness.

Such, Jesus testified, was to be the aim of His ministry: declare good news to the poor, to set at liberty those who are bruised, to release the captives, to set the prisoner free, to give sight to the blind. The poverty within the declaration of His commission, is the poverty of slavery, and the blindness, a blindness that imprisons us in the darkness that hides His face.

Borrowing from Martin Luther King, Jr: All creation shall finally shout with joy, "free, free, at last...." for a Deliverer has gone forth out of Zion gloriously free in His delivering power. Those most in bondage by their bruising; those within the darkest, deepest and gloomiest regions of the prison; those shackled by the most painful of chains, shall lead freedom's parade, their faces a-glow with the light of redeeming grace.

"Once my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound by sin and nature's night.
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray, I rose, the dungeon flamed with light.
My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee."
